Can ClickUp Replace Slack?

ClickUp is a powerful task management tool that provides an integrated messaging tool. ClickUp is an all-in-one tool that has the advantage of being able to integrate chatting, tasks, and comments in a single tool.

Slack on the other hand is a powerful enterprise communication tool. Its primary offering is the chat function, based around individual and group conversations, as well as defined private and public channels, as well as voice and video calls. It also offers integrations with a number of different tools.

ClickUp can replace Slack if your organisation uses project and task-centered communication, because chatting and comments in ClickUp is designed to work that way. Slack is better at enterprise-level communications, with the added functionality to allow the creation of multiple channels and group conversations.

The ClickUp Chat View

The Chat View is available alongside the other views we talked about in our article ClickUp Task Views and When to Use Them. The chat context is therefore within the space or project. The chat window allows for powerful formatting features such as tables, checklists, dividers and code blocks.

Slack Chat Window

The Slack chat window of course the main window in Slack. On the left hand side you can see the list of channels and people to chat with. If a new message is available, the channel or individual is bolded.

To start a call, you can click on the image near the top right, and select ‘Start a Call’.

I’ve created an empty workspace in Slack, since I couldn’t take a screenshot of a ‘real’ Slack workspace.

Creating Slack-lite in ClickUp

There is a way to create a lite version of Slack in ClickUp, where within a project you create tasks – one task for each channel you would normally have in Slack, and to communicate in a channel, each person needs to open the task and comment. It is a compromise, but if your organisation would like the channel organisation that Slack provides, then it is a way to implement it in Slack.
