What is the difference between change management and change leadership?

Change Management is the discipline of analysing, planning and executing the actions to be taken to help people respond to the change. This can include communications, training, and engaging directly with the people most impacted by the change. Change Management frameworks help to guide organisations and change managers on the process. These frameworks include ADKAR, The Lewin Model, the McKinsey 7S model, and the Satir Change Management Model.

Change leadership is the actions taken to by leaders to help people in their organisation respond positively to the change. Their actions can have a significant impact on the way the change is perceived and how people respond to it. Examples of effective change leadership actions are speaking directly to their teams about the change, what it means for them, and why it is happening. They can model the changes (for example if a change in behaviour is required), help communications by requesting and responding to questions about the change, and in general be an advocate for the change, using their leadership and seniority to influence the people around them.
